The Australian Government has recently introduced changes to the English language requirements for Student and Temporary Graduate visas. These changes, announced as part of the Migration Strategy on December 11, 2023, aim to enhance the experience of international students in Australia and prepare them for success in the Australian workforce.
From March 23, 2024, all visa applications must adhere to the new English language standards. Here’s a breakdown of the key adjustments:
English Language Requirements For Student Visas:
-
- The minimum required score in the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) has been raised from 5.5 to 6.0.
- For those opting for an English Language Intensive Course for Overseas Students (ELICOS) before their main course, the required IELTS score has increased from 4.5 to 5.0.
- University foundation or pathway programs delivering reputable English language training will require a minimum IELTS score of 5.5.
- However, there are no changes for students solely studying English through ELICOS, full-time school attendance, secondary exchange programs, or postgraduate research studies.
English Language Requirements For Temporary Graduate Visas (TGV):
-
- The minimum required IELTS score has increased from 6.0 to 6.5, with a minimum score of 5.5 for each test component (reading, writing, speaking, and listening).
- Applicants are required to submit proof of having completed an English Language test that meets these requirements within one year prior to the visa application date.
- Hong Kong and British National Overseas (BNO) passport holders are exempted from this increase and must still meet the previous requirement of IELTS 6.0, with a minimum score of 5.0 for each component.
